The Depreciation Fairy Bedevils Capt. Mike
February 28, 2009
When I was a little boy, my father regaled me with tales of magical creatures that lurked in the Ardennes Forest, the Alps and the high steppes of the Cossack Frontier. Dozens of ‘em. And yet Dad forgot the one about the Magical Depreciation Fairy. You know: the creature that lurks in vast concrete expanses [...]

First Drive: 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid and GMC Sierra Hybrid

With the 2009 editions of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Hybrids just now beginning to appear on dealer lots around the country, we decided it would be a good idea to strap ourselves behind the wheel of the fuel-saving duo to see what fuel efficiency improvements we could manage in some typical city driving scenarios. Plus, there’s all kinds of techno-wizardry at play as soon as the driver’s right loafer touches the go-pedal, so we were keenly interested to see if The General was able to harness the power of three distinct power sources (one gas engine, two electric motors) while keeping everything smooth and controlled as one would expect from a $40,000 pickup truck.

VIDEO: More on TAC Motors’ Stark raving awesome Brazilian bomber

It’s not the love child of a Smart Fortwo and a Jeep Wrangler — it’s the TAC Motors Stark 4X4. While we’re not entirely sold on the looks of its four-piece composite shell, this off-roader is now aequipped to handle whatever terrain you might happen to encounter. Previously available with an ethanol-burning Volkswagen engine, power now comes from a 2.3-liter turbodiesel making 220 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a five-speed synchronized transmission that sends power through a Borg Warner transfer case back to a stout Dana 44 rear axle. A set of skidplates looks to keep it all protected.
Four-wheel independent suspension might make this more of a high-speed traveler than a slow moving rock-crawler, so we can envision plenty of Baja-style thrills behind the wheel of this beast. In any case, it [...]

Porsche | Porsche 911 | car tuning
Following a 1000 HP Porsche is no easy task, but the tuners at Switzer Performance Innovations are following up with the L4 700/750 Tiptronic package for the 911 Turbo. Upgrades include ECU tweaking, larger intercoolers and a free flowing exhaust. All of these components allow the Porsche to sprint to 60 MPH (100 Km/h) in just 2.5 seconds with a top speed in excess of 200 MPH. The kit is priced at $18,450. (…)

Spy Shots: Facelifted Fiat Grande Punto spotted, and it’s HOT!
February 28, 2009
Filed under: Spy Photos, Etc., Euro, FIAT
The facelift Fiat’s carrying out on its Grande Punto is subtle. Even so, it’s hard to maintain your cover when the test mule self-immolates. A full replacement will be coming in 2012, and to bridge the gap, Fiat is preparing a slight nose job to the current GP. The headlamps and fascia are getting minor tweaks for the 2010 model year, and while out trying to blend into the surrounding snow and carry out tests, something went wrong. Firefighters handled the situation quickly, and only the car sustained injuries. Perhaps it’s a stealth feature that will activate when the 2012 Grande Punto drops, as a way to stimulate sales.
